Expert Training and Troubleshooting for Tank Farm Fuel Line Coatings

Expert Training and Troubleshooting for Tank Farm Fuel Line Coatings

PROBLEM

Tank Farm Fuel Line Coating: A contractor responsible for maintaining a tank farm with airport jet fuel lines encountered significant challenges in their coating process. The jet fuel lines, coated with various materials like white atmospheric paint, PVC/utility tape, mastic coating, and yellow hard plastic coating, required a corrosion-resistant solution. To achieve this and provide a long-term underground solution, USI’s AMPP (Association for Materials Protection and Performance) Coating Inspector was called onsite for training, troubleshooting, and problem-solving.

SUBSTRATE

The pipelines in question were made of metal, which is typically used in tank farms for its strength and durability. However, metal pipelines are susceptible to corrosion, especially in environments like fuel lines, necessitating effective protective coatings.

SOLUTION

The approach to this complex task involved several steps:

  • Coating Removal: The first challenge was to remove the different types of existing coatings from the pipelines. Each coating type required a specific removal technique.
  • Handling Various Pipe Sizes: The tank farm featured pipes ranging from 4 inches to 36 inches in diameter, posing a challenge in terms of applying a uniform coating.
  • Abrasive Blasting: After removing the existing coatings, the contractor abrasive blasted the lines to prepare the surface for the new coating.
  • Application of Denso Protal 7200: For the larger diameter pipes, Denso Protal 7200 Spray Grade in 1,000ml Cartridges was used. This method ensured efficient and even application over large surfaces. Conversely, the smaller diameter pipes were coated using Denso Protal 7200 Brush Grade from 1L Kits, applied by brushing or rolling to ensure precision and coverage.
  • Expert Training: USI’s AMPP Coating Inspector, also a Certified Denso Trainer, provided comprehensive training to the contractor’s team. This training covered both the spray grade and brush grade systems, ensuring the team was well-equipped to handle the project’s demands.
