Our Story
Founded by Doug Klingensmith on one idea: real service still matters. We show up. We solve problems. We deliver results.
2002
Doug Klingensmith starts Unconventional Solutions to focus on corrosion protection, composite repair and industrial coatings.
2004
USI becomes a distributor for E. Wood Ltd., maker of Copon, ThistleBond and Thortex.
2005
USI builds its first warehouse to keep up with growing demand.
2007
After 3M acquires E. Wood Ltd., USI becomes a 3M Scotchkote distributor.
2012
Doug and Tiffany Klingensmith buy the company's headquarters in Wixom, Michigan.
2017
USI opens a Springboro branch, led by Jason Taylor, to serve partners such as Duke Energy.
2022
Tiffany Klingensmith is named WBE of the Year by the Great Lakes Women's Business Council (MI & IN).
2024
Honored by the U.S. SBA and Great Lakes WBC, presented in Washington, D.C.

USI is a certified Women's Business Enterprise, recognized by the Great Lakes Women's Business Council and the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Under Tiffany's leadership, USI has grown and given back to its community. She was named 2022 WBE of the Year by the Great Lakes Women's Business Council (MI & IN).
Founder | VP, Sales & Marketing
Doug founded USI in 2002. He has presented at the Appalachian Underground Corrosion Short Course and the Underground Corrosion Short Course in Fort Wayne, IN, and since 2016 has taught Introduction to Coatings and co-chaired Practical Application.
