The Problem

The client, concerned about the durability and safety of the concrete steps and entryways into their buildings they needed concrete stair refurbishment, sought a long-lasting coating solution. The existing paint was failing, requiring complete removal and replacement. The client prioritized safety, specifically seeking a non-skid solution to prevent slips and falls.

The Substrate

Concrete: The steps and entryways were made of concrete, necessitating a robust and enduring coating solution to withstand daily use and weather conditions.

The Solution

Unconventional Solutions, Inc. (USI) implemented a comprehensive repair and coating process to address the client’s needs:

1. Coating Removal:
   • The existing coating on the horizontal surfaces was removed using a stand-behind diamond grinder.
   • For the vertical surfaces, a hand grinder with diamond disks was employed to ensure thorough removal of the old paint.
2. Concrete Preparation:
   • All rust-contaminated concrete was meticulously removed. In some areas, concrete was removed up to 6 inches into the vertical sections to ensure a clean and stable substrate.
   • The cleaned and prepped surfaces were then repaired using the USI Epoxy Mortar Patch Kit, restoring the integrity of the steps and entryways.
3. Primer Application:
   • The following day, a thin coat of USI Quick Prime WB was applied. Once the primer became tacky (approximately 2 hours), it set the stage for the next coating layer.
4. Deck Coating Membrane:
   • A single coat of USI Urethane Elastomeric Deck Coating Membrane was applied over the primed surfaces. This membrane provides a flexible and durable base layer, ideal for areas exposed to foot traffic and environmental stresses.
5. Non-Skid Coating:
   • On the third day, USI Moisture Curing Polyurethane Color Coating was applied. White Aluminum Oxide was back-rolled into this coating to create a non-skid surface, significantly enhancing safety.
   • Due to rain delays, the final step was completed on the fourth morning. USI VOC Compliant Urethane Safety Yellow was applied, providing a visible and durable safety marking.

The Outcome

The project was a success, completed within the timeframe despite weather-related delays. The new coating system significantly improved the durability and safety of the concrete steps and entryways. Throughout the project, over 30 people commented positively on the improvements, highlighting the impact of the work. Due to the successful outcome, the client has already scheduled another set of stairs for refurbishment in the future.
