Stair Refurbishment at a Refinery

Stair Refurbishment at a Refinery

The Problem

This client had concrete steps and entryways into the buildings that needed some type of coating that would be more durable than just some paint as what was on there was failing and in need of removal and replacement.

He went on to explain that improving safety is one of the main concerns for wanting to get the steps redone and was looking for some non-skid characteristics.

The Solution

We started by removing the coating on the horizontal surfaces with a stand behind diamond grinder. On the verticals we used a hand grinder with diamond disks.

The concrete was prepped by removing all the rust contaminated concrete, which was a long and tedious process. Some of the concrete was removed to 6 inches into the vertical areas.

After the surface prep was completed, we repaired the surfaces that were removed with the USI Epoxy Mortar Patch Kit.

The next day a thin coat of USI Quick Prime WB was applied, we waited until the primer was tacky (2 hours) and applied one coat of USI Urethane Elastomeric Deck Coating Membrane.

On the third day the USI Moisture Curing Polyurethane Color Coating was applied by adding White Aluminum Oxide back rolled into the coating.

Since we had some rain days delays, we came back on the fourth morning and added the USI VOC Compliant Urethane Safety Yellow.

While the project was in process, we had over 30 people come and tell us what a difference we had made at their place of work. We are already in the process and doing another set of stairs in the future.
