Efficient Corrosion Protection for Compressed Air Pipe Over a River

Efficient Corrosion Protection for Compressed Air Pipe Over a River

The Problem

Compressed Air Pipe Corrosion Protection: A company specializing in the supply of atmospheric and specialty gases to various industries, including aerospace, chemical, oil, and gas, faced a significant challenge. They were dealing with heavy corrosion on a compressed air pipe, a crucial component of their operation. The pipe’s location over a river added complexity to the situation, necessitating a solution that was not only economical and quick but also compliant with strict Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations.

The company was looking for an economical and quick solution that adheres to strict EPA regulations due to the pipe’s position over a river.

The Substrate

The affected pipeline was made of steel, a material known for its strength and durability but also prone to corrosion, especially in harsh environmental conditions.

The Solution

The company adopted a multi-faceted approach to address the corrosion issue:

  • Initial Preparation: About 200 feet of the pipe was hand-scraped and abraded to remove flaking paint. This step was essential to prepare the surface for the subsequent protective applications.
  • Application of Viscotaq E-Z Wrap: The pipe was then wrapped with Viscotaq E-Z Wrap, a 70 mil paintable tape known for its immediate adhesion, a-polar nature, water rejection, and zero cure time. This product was particularly suitable for the pipe’s challenging location over the river.
  • Painting: After the application of Viscotaq E-Z Wrap, the pipe was painted in the company’s signature color, enhancing its aesthetics and adding an additional layer of protection.
  • Soil to Air Transition Protection: At the transition from soil to air, the pipe was again hand-scraped and abraded. Denso Glass Outerwrap was then applied from the flange to the yellow jacket, approximately 7 feet, providing extra protection in this critical area.
  • Pipe Support Coating: All pipe supports were coated with Resichem 555 Resinox, a single-component, water-based, anti-corrosive coating, ensuring comprehensive protection of the pipeline infrastructure.
