Cooling Tower Basin Repair at Nuclear Power Plant

Cooling Tower Basin Repair at Nuclear Power Plant

The Problem

A nuclear power plant faced significant issues with its cooling tower basin the concrete was in need of repair. The basin was in a state of disrepair, with the concrete wall exhibiting severe cracks and wear, and the exposed metal rebar undergoing corrosion. Given the critical role of the cooling tower in a nuclear plant’s operations, it was imperative to address these problems swiftly and effectively.

Cooling Tower Basin Concrete Repair

The Solution

Unconventional Solutions was tasked with the repair job, employing a two-pronged approach:

  • Rebar Coating with RESICHEM 506 Aluprime: The exposed rebar, suffering from corrosion, was first treated with RESICHEM 511 UCEN 90. This high-build epoxy is specifically designed to provide exceptional, long-term corrosion protection in a single coat. Its application was crucial in preventing further deterioration of the metal components of the basin.
  • Concrete Repair with RESICHEM 571 Light Weight Concrete Repair: The damaged concrete was then prepared and repaired using RESICHEM 571 Light Weight Concrete Repair. This product is particularly suitable for vertical or overhead surfaces, providing a strong and durable repair solution for concrete structures. It is 100% solid, VOC-free, and offers 6000 psi of compression strength, making it an ideal choice for the demanding conditions of the cooling tower basin.

The repair project successfully restored the structural integrity of the cooling tower basin. The application of RESICHEM 511 UCEN 90 and RESICHEM 571 Light Weight Concrete Repair not only repaired the existing damage but also provided long-term protection against future deterioration. The nuclear power plant benefitted from an effective, durable repair solution, ensuring the continued safe and efficient operation of its cooling tower system.
